My Reiki Journey ~ Part One

Reiki is a Japanese technique for relaxation which can also promote healing.

This is the “politically correct” definition of Reiki, but it is much more than that. I have only just begun to break the surface of the awesomeness of this wonderful and loving energy. I had my Reiki Level 1 attunement on August 17, 2013, and I would like to share my story with you. (If anything I say here doesn’t make sense, or is incorrect as far as history and/or techniques etc, please feel free to comment. Every person’s interpretation may be a bit different, but in the end, the energy and intent is the same.)

My husband and I made the drive up to the Verde Valley from Phoenix, AZ on the morning of Friday, August 16th. I was so excited to be in this beautiful vortex energy once again. We checked into our hotel and decided to get some lunch in town. We spent some time relaxing in the hotel room before it was time for our reservation at the Mesa Grill. The food was delicious and the sunset was amazing.

We got up bright and early the next morning and enjoyed the hotel’s continental breakfast. Bellies full and anxious to get to my Reiki class, we headed out. The drive was very nice on the way to my Reiki teacher’s home and I was feeling very relaxed. My husband was driving, so maybe that had something to do with it 😉

We pulled up to the house and walked up to the front door. I rang the doorbell and there she was! This was the first time I had met Deb in person, and she was exactly like I thought she would be. Her energy was warm and loving. I found that same energy throughout her home as well. I felt very comfortable being there.

After chatting for a bit, my husband left so I could start my Reiki training.

We started out with a guided meditation that lasted about 20 minutes. During the meditation, I felt my mother’s energy and heard her say to me, “You are amazing and you are doing what you are supposed to do. I love you.” Upon hearing her voice, I felt an emotional release and began crying. Afterwards, Deb and I talked about the basics of Reiki and why and how I came to know that I wanted to learn Reiki. I told her that I have always known on a deep level that I was brought on the Earth to help people. I have always had a desire to help people heal. I also feel that this desire only grew stronger after the death of my mother in 2008. I felt like if I only had the right tools, that I could help her. I realize now that she had to go through that in order for her soul to learn.

I was supposed to have my attunement after lunch, but Deb said that she had been guided to give it to me right away. I was ecstatic to hear that! She had me sit in a chair and close my eyes. I felt a profound peacefulness and wholeness. The attunement took about two minutes. She was done. My Reiki switch was turned on! After my attunement, Deb gave me about fifteen minutes to settle into my new energy before we started learning the hand positions. I gave myself a self-treatment so I could become familiar with how the energy feels when it flows.

We enjoyed a nice break for lunch and then went over the history of Reiki. She told me about Dr. Mikao Usui, after whom my particular Reiki training is named. She also went on to tell me about Dr. Hayashi and Mrs. Takata, who were both major influences on how Reiki is taught and transferred today.

After lunch, it was time to give my first Reiki treatment. Deb was first to receive. She climbed onto the table and got herself comfortable. She explained how to place the hands while I gave her Reiki. I felt the energy flowing through my hands at different intensities as I moved to different areas of her body. I could not believe I was actually able to do this! I was totally in awe of my newfound gift of healing.

We switched places and it was my turn to receive. As she moved her hands to different areas of my body, I felt heat and tingling. Afterwards, I felt very relaxed.

I completed my Reiki Level 1 training and Deb handed me my certificate. At that moment, I realized that I had found my passion. My true life purpose is to be an energy healer using Reiki!

My husband arrived, I said goodbye to Deb and thanked her for being an awesome teacher. Then we picked up some dinner at Cucina Rustica (order Portobello Alla Griglia, you won’t be disappointed!) and made our way back to the hotel.

We spent the next day shopping, sightseeing and I was happily settling into my new energy. I had a few rough points where I was feeling extremely hot, even though it was only 83° outside. I found a water fountain and gulped down as much water as I could drink, then filled up my empty water bottle. We decided that the energy of Uptown was a bit too much for me, so we headed to the Tlaquepaque area, where the energy is much nicer.

Since I have been back home, I have done daily self-healing treatments. I have also done a few treatments on my husband, as well as my brother and sister-in-law.

I have my Level 2 class scheduled for October 20th and I can’t wait!
